FAQs
What jewellery does Car and Kitchen sell?
Car and Kitchen sells earrings, necklaces and bracelets at our shop in Settle and online. Pilgrim makes gold- and silver-plated huggies, snake chains, crystal hearts and freshwater pearls. Pom brings plated T-bars, hearts and bangles as well as our solid sterling silver studs and necklaces. Tutti & Co’s pieces have soft, organic shapes, some set with pearls or blue topaz, and Big Metal adds colourful beaded necklaces and fruity huggies.
What’s the difference between sterling silver, plated and faux gold jewellery?
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver, the standard for solid silver jewellery. Plated jewellery has a thin layer of silver or gold over a base metal, so you get the look for a lower price. Faux gold is gold-coloured plating rather than real gold. Each product page tells you which finish you’re buying.
Which jewellery is best for sensitive ears?
Sterling silver is the usual starting point, as many people with sensitive skin find it easier to wear than fashion jewellery. Our small sterling silver studs are an easy way to try it. Everyone’s skin is different, so if you know a particular metal bothers you, check the finish on the product page before you buy.
How do I look after my jewellery?
Put your jewellery on last and take it off first. Perfume, hand cream, swimming and showers are what wear plating down fastest. Wipe pieces with a soft, dry cloth after wearing, and store them separately so they don’t scratch or tangle. Sterling silver darkens naturally over time, and a silver polishing cloth brings the shine back.
How do I build an everyday jewellery collection?
Start with pieces you’ll forget you’re wearing: small studs or hoops, a fine chain necklace and a bracelet that works with everything. Choose the metal you reach for most. Once you have the basics, add a statement earring or a colourful necklace for the days you want something different.
Can I wear gold and silver together?
Yes, and it’s an easy way to make a few pieces go further. The simplest way to tie the two together is a piece that combines both metals, such as a silver necklace with gold detail. Otherwise, mixing works best when the shapes are kept simple and the two metals are spread evenly, rather than all the gold on one side.
How do I choose jewellery as a gift?
Look at what they already wear. Do they reach for gold or silver? Do they prefer small studs or bold drops? And check their ears are pierced before choosing earrings. A necklace or bracelet is the safe choice if you’re not sure. If you can’t decide, our gift cards come in £10 to £100 and can be spent online or in the shop.
Can I return jewellery?
Necklaces, bracelets and rings can be returned within 30 days of receiving your order, as long as they’re unused and in their original packaging. Earrings and other pierced jewellery can only be returned if the sealed packaging is unopened. Sale items can only be returned if they’re faulty.
